Plains and Plateau Tribes: YAKIMA

	Yakima The Yakima Language is part of the Penutian Language family. The Yakima have a bilateral kinship system. At menarche, girls went to a menstrual hut under taboos, after which, a brief ceremony with gifts was held in honor of the girl's pass into adulthood. Marriages were arranged with the agreement and consent of the couples. The couple usually went to live with the girl's family and had a matrilocal residency. There was no formal marriage ceremony until the birth of the couple's first child. When the first child was born, then both families exchanged gifts. Childbirth took place in a small cone mat lodge assisted by an older woman. At the baby's birth they held a feast and the baby was placed on a cradleboard until age 2 or 3.
